Jinshandian Fm
Type Locality and Naming
It was named by Chen Gongxiu as the “Jinshandian Member” in 1983, and was first cited publicly as the “Jinshandian Formation” by the Geological Bureau of Hubei Province in 1990. The naming section is located on the Xiaoshan Hills of Jinshandian area, Daye County, Hubei Province.

Lithology and Thickness
Composed of an alternating layer of yellow-green fine-grained sandstone, siltstone and mudstone, intercalated with carbonaceous shale and coal seams, with purple mudstone and siderite-bearing concretions being found occasionally. It is 134 m thick.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
It is in a conformable contact with the underlying Dawangchong Fm
Upper contact
Regionally, the schematic strat column indicates the next younger unit as Huajiahu Fm
Regional extent
It is distributed mainly in the area of Jinshandian of Daye County, Bishidu of Echeng County, Ma’anshan and Xianrenshan of Wuchang County. Both its lithology and thickness tend to change slightly from place to place. In the area of Hekou of Huangshi City and Liulong of Qichun County the rocks there are getting coarser and their thickness is getting smaller, being in a range from 30 m to 60 m, while in the area of Chengchao and Bishidu of Echeng County their thickness being of 52-120 m, and in the area of Puqi, Echeng County, their thickness being of 60-110 m.

Fossils
It yields bivalves belonging to the Qiyangia-Hunanella assemblage whose major members are: Qiyangia cuneata, Q. lilingensis, Q. loxos, Apseudocardinia ovalis, Pseudocardinia elongata and Cuneopsis vadiatilincata; plant fossils as represented by the Todites princeps-Ptilophyllum assemblage whose important members are: Coniopteris hymenophylloides, Dictyophyllum cf. nilssoni, Thaumatopteris cf. schenki, Ptilophyllum contiguum and Otozamites hsiangchiensis.

Depositional setting
The formation belongs to inner continental lacustrine deposits, locally to swamp-facies deposits.
